OK I’ll admit it. When I first started card making all those years ago I honestly didn’t think there was much to it.

Just a bit of glitter and glue, right?

Well as much as glue and glitter can do wonders to a handmade card, it’s definitely not not the end of the story. Ohhhhh no. If you want to become a die-hard and completely obsessed card making addict (as I became) then you want to know everything, right? The techniques, the tips, what supplies to use and when… the list was endless.

Unfortunately for me, I had no clue where to learn all of these secretive tips and techniques that ‘professional’ card makers hold so close to their chests. How was my card making going to improve if I couldn’t learn from the masters?

 

‘OK, how hard can it be?’ I mused.

So with scissors in hand, I got out all of my beautiful patterned papers and embellishments…

The most reasonable reaction should be one of sheer inspiration and excitement, right? Looking at all these creative pleasures, how couldn’t you be? Unfortunately, what I felt was sheer panic followed by a sort of ‘glazed’ expression that held for… I don’t know how long! Hard to tell when you have no idea what you’re doing or where to start!

To be honest, I just felt a bit overwhelmed. I had no clue where to start, nor how to use some of the craft supplies I’d bought. How would I make this paper look nice? What other paper should I put it with? Do I have to put this with that? What ink and adhesive should I use?

Hmmmm. Wasn’t this meant to be…fun?

 

Isn’t it funny how you can sit down with all your fab crafting tools and supplies laid out in front of you, about to become the ‘maestro’ of your next new creation and then…

Nothing.

Not one little spark of inspiration! Where did it go? It was there half an hour ago!?

After checking under the table, the bed, under last month’s ‘Interiors’ magazine (and especially under the cat), you come to the devastating and only conclusion that you can come to in this hour of despair. That’s it. You’ve lost your mojo.

It’s at times like these that you just can’t seem to think of one good card idea, even if your life depended on it. And it frustrated me so much! I knew that with just the right push I’d be able to get crafting immediately. I just needed that little inkling of inspiration…

But from where???

 

Well my huge lack of know-how and inspiration showed. I’ll admit it. (Sob!)

My first attempt at card making was, at its best, a pitiful affair. And frustration started settling in. Why did my cards look so dull and uninspired? They just didn’t look like the professional handmade ones you might see in shops or in magazines. They lacked ‘pizazz’. And to be honest, I was pretty embarrassed to give them to people. (In fact I don’t think I ever did!)

 

But hang on just one minute!

This was not what I signed up for!

I had envisaged myself making cards that turned heads! I wanted to make little pieces of art that the recipient would treasure and keep forever.

And it was more than that…

If you’re like me, then making handmade greeting cards brings you fulfilment. It’s a fantastic outlet for your creativity (even if you’re not the least bit artistic). And it’s a wonderful way to escape from today’s worries. It can become your ‘escape to creativity’ where you can just be yourself.

That’s when I actually sat down and looked at what I really wanted from my card making hobby. I wanted:

That’s when I decided that enough was enough. Surely you shouldn’t need to be a millionaire to enjoy this hobby. After all, it’s such a wonderful feeling to give a handmade card to someone. Their joyful reaction is such a pleasure to behold. Surely it shouldn’t be so expensive to spread this type of joy?

So I began designing my own papers. I’ve always been artistic and I’ve always loved designing things. The way I figured, I could design my own papers and print them over and over again, as and when I needed them.

Meanwhile, I put my learning cap on…

I studied as much as I could about the art of card making. And I began to seek out the ‘expert card makers’ that were top of their field. I learned from them, and devoured every single card making-related book, web site and magazine I could lay my hands on.

 

And it worked!

Finally, my cards started to get amazing attention and compliments from those I gave them to. I was actually making cards that had the ‘wow factor’ and I felt so proud! So much so that I eventually decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and release what I had learned publicly, so that other card makers could enjoy similar results.
